Porch Light Announces 5th Anniversary Season

posted 08/14/13

After an incredible 2012/13 season that earned Porch Light 11 Perry Award nominations, the team is gearing up for an amazing fifth anniversary season! Our 2013/14 programming includes four Main Stage shows, more than ten youth and family shows, six drama club productions, touring shows, studio classes and more.

The explosive Main Stage season kicks off with the Alan Ball's hilarious and raw "5 Women Wearing the Same Dress" - a comedy about five reluctant bridesmaids that hide out in an upstairs bedroom to avoid the wedding happening below them. As the afternoon wears on, these five very different women joyously discover a common bond in this wickedly funny, irreverent and touching celebration of the female spirit. Performances are September 27, 28, 29, October 4 and 5. Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sunday at 2PM.

Then in October, bring the family for a ghoulishly good time as Porch Light's original Halloween musical, Stage Fright" returns, October 25-27. Nominated in 2011 for Best Original Musical (NJACT), this comedic look at monster life will leave you howling in the aisles! The charmingly creepy story follows a group of trick or treaters who stumble upon the home of Old Lady Fargus and her gang of monsters. Can they escape in time to see another Halloween or will they too be doomed to live a life in hiding? Performed by Porch Light's Award-Winning Youth Performance Troupe (YPT).

Porch Light brings in 2013 with 'The Last 5 Years' the emotionally powerful story of two twenty-something New Yorkers who dive head first into a marriage fueled by the optimism that comes with finding "the one." But in a city where professional and personal passions collide and only the strongest relationships survive, navigating the waters of love and matrimony can sometimes prove too much. Funny, honest and intimate, with an exuberantly romantic score, The Last Five Years takes a bold look at one young couple's hope that love endures the test of time. Performances run January 10, 11, 12, 16, 17 and 18. Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sunday at 2PM.

Then in March, members of our high school conservatory program take the stage in Jonathan Larson's acclaimed musical RENT. Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.

Porch Light's Main Stage shows pick up once more in April with Sam Shepard's "True West". The story follows well-educated Austin and thieving con man Lee, estranged brothers from different worlds, reunite in their mom's California kitchen, where Austin is working out a screenplay deal. But when Lee comes up with his own big idea and steals much more than just the neighbors' TV, challenges are issued, many drinks are downed, and the siblings find that they might not be such opposites after all. This dynamic, darkly funny play by iconic actor-writer Sam Shepard is a tale of brotherly love and competition, Hollywood producers and stolen toasters. Performances run April 11, 12, 13, 18 & 19. Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 2PM.

In May and early June, our Youth Performance Troupe members present their final productions of the season, with the classic musical 'Bye Bye Birdie' presented by the junior ensemble, followed by the classic Sondheim masterpiece 'Into the Woods' presented by our senior company.

Porch Light Productions wraps up its intense and diverse 2013/14 season in June with the Main Stage performance of the deeply moving "Next to Normal" - a story of a mother who struggles with bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. This contemporary musical is an emotional powerhouse that addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life. With provocative lyrics and a thrilling score, this musical shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family's world intact. Performances are June 20, 21, 22, 26, 27 & 28. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays @ 2PM.
